Course Overview
Human Resource Management commonly abbreviated as “HRM” describes any formal systems developed for the management of people within a given organization with a sole objective of maximizing employee performance. The role of Human resource management involves; staffing (employee recruitment), training, employee benefits and compensation, developing and designing employee work descriptions among other related activities. In any given organization, the purpose of HRM is to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its employees. Professionals in this line of work may are commonly referred to as Human Resource Managers among other titles. Human resources managers are involved with overall planning, direction and coordination of the administrative functions of organizations. In their day to day activities, they oversee the recruiting process, interviews as well as hiring of new staff, consulting with top executives on human resource strategic planning and acting as a link between an organization’s employees and its top management.
The Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management is a four year programme that has been developed to equip students with skills and knowledge required in the field of HRM. It is also intended to equip professional HR managers with the tools to meet effectively the challenges of an ever-changing business climate. The curriculum of the programme has been designed to offer students with advanced training in areas of training, staffing, recruitment, industrial and labour laws, career development, benefits & compensation, conflict management and negotiation, health & safety and labour relations, retirement and pension schemes, legal among other areas. The overall objective of the course is to prepare students for careers in human resource management both in public and private sectors. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will have been well prepared for positions in human resource department leadership and be well equipped with skills and knowledge that can enable them to establish and advance organizational policies and guidelines as well as being able to utilize the tools and techniques for developing transformational work environments for the employees.
Entry requirement
For self sponsored students, at least a mean grade of C+ in KCSE. For Government sponsored students, the minimum cut point which is announced annually applies. The students should in addition have good performance in the following cluster Subjects; Subject 1 ENG/KIS, Subject 2 MAT A / MAT B or any GROUP II, Subject 3 any GROUP III, Subject 4 a GROUP II or 2nd GROUP III or any GROUP IV or any GROUP V.
Becoming a human resources manager
If you enjoy interacting with people, are an effective communicator with excellent presentation skills and interested on how the people working in companies are hired, trained or even motivated to increase overall productivity, then pursuing this course might be a good choice for you. In addition, you should be prepared to develop skills that can help you grow and succeed in this field.
Human resources managers must have excellent interpersonal skills because they regularly interact with people of all levels. They also need to have good teamwork skills as they often collaborate with other team members and must be able to develop positive working relationships with their colleagues. Working in HR departments requires one to have excellent decision making skills to be able to balance the weaknesses and strengths of various options and decide the best course of action.
These professionals must have proper leadership skills as they must be able to direct and supervise staff as well as overseeing the various departmental operations. HR personnel must be well organized as they must be able to manage various projects at hand and prioritize tasks based on urgency. Communication skills are quite paramount in this profession as HR personnel must be able to give oral presentation as well as giving or communicating information and instructions to their staff and other employees.
Work environment.
Human resources managers work mostly in offices but may sometimes travel to attend professional meetings or to recruit employees.
Career opportunities
Graduates of this course maybe employed within human resources management departments in both public and private sectors. Some areas of employment include; Government ministries and parastatals, construction firms, manufacturing industries, healthcare providers, banking institutions, communication firms, engineering companies, agricultural sectors among others. Graduates can also start their own HR consulting businesses.
